چکیده

This paper presents the first near-real-time freehand ultrasound elastography system using a (3-D) mechanical probe. Acquisition is complete within two sec, and only an additional 20 sec are required for generation of a full 3-D strain volume. The strain is axial, with estimates of lateral and elevational tissue movement used to increase the accuracy of the axial strain measurement. This is the first time all system components have been extended to 3-D, i.e., 3-D windows are used to track displacement, which is tracked in all directions, and 3-D kernels are used for least-squares gradient estimates. Normalization of the freehand 3-D strain data is also applied across the whole volume. The system is tested using a novel research 3-D radiofrequency (RF) system with real-time control over the stepper motor driving the ultrasound probe, and real-time streaming of RF ultrasound data. The paper proves the concept, rather than making significant comments on the achievable accuracy in 3-D, although we demonstrate that the high performance of the 2-D techniques that we extend appears to carry through to in-vitro and in-vivo 3-D data. The result is a fast and high-resolution 3-D image of normalized axial strain. (E-mail: [email protected]).

Real-time 3-D ultrafast ultrasound quasi-static elastography in vivo

Ultrasound elastography, a technique used to assess mechanical properties of soft tissue is of major interest in the detection of breast cancer as it is stiffer than the surroundings. Techniques such as ultrasound quasi-static elastography have been developed to assess the strain distribution in soft tissues in two dimensions using a quasi-static compression. However, tumors can exhibit very he...

3D Elastography Using Freehand Ultrasound

We present an elastography system using freehand 3D ultrasound. A review is provided of the standard elastography methods that have been adapted for this purpose. The scanning protocol is simple and promising results are presented of 3D strain images from freehand scans. Robustness is a problem, however, and the main sources of error are explained. Measures have been developed to improve the qu...

Ablation Monitoring with Elastography: 2D In-vivoand 3D Ex-vivoStudies

The clinical feasibility of 2D elastography methods is hindered by the requirement that the operator avoid out-of-plane motion of the ultrasound image during palpation, and also by the lack of volumetric elastography measurements. In this paper, we develop and evaluate a 3D elastography method operating on volumetric data acquired from a 3D probe. Our method is based on minimizing a cost functi...

A freehand ultrasound elastography system with tracking for in vivo applications.

Ultrasound transducers are commonly tracked in modern ultrasound navigation/guidance systems. In this article, we demonstrate the advantages of incorporating tracking information into ultrasound elastography for clinical applications. First, we address a common limitation of freehand palpation: speckle decorrelation due to out-of-plane probe motion. We show that by automatically selecting pairs...

3D Quasi-Static Ultrasound Elastography With Plane Wave In Vivo

In biological tissue, an increase in elasticity is often a marker of abnormalities. Techniques such as quasi-static ultrasound elastography have been developed to assess the strain distribution in soft tissues in two dimensions using a quasi-static compression. However, as abnormalities can exhibit very heterogeneous shapes, a three dimensional approach would be necessary to accurately measure ...
